Start 6 weeks prior to planting outside. Plant ¼" deep in flats, trans- planting into Jiffy Pots when plants are 2" high, or sow outdoors as soon as soil can be worked. Sow thinly ¼" deep in rows 3' apart, spac- ing seed 18" apart. Maturity dates are based from the time the plants are transplanted into the garden. To provide proper blanching, the heads should be tied before they are 3" across.

When starting carrots, plant some radish seeds with them as a nurse crop. The radishes will help mark the row so you can do some weed- ing before the carrots emerge. This also gives you radishes without us- ing a separate row to grow them.
