frequency drives – intelligent NB-E pumps. These could provide the exact flow requirements to the chillerswithoutwastage and improve the Delta-T to five degrees Celsius. A simple, turnkey solution. H&H saw results almost immediately. At Indigo Tower, the pumps previously used 36 kWevery hour. After the upgrade, they used between 7-10 kW/h. Nowtwo years in operation, they use 81%less electricity than previously. In addition, pump efficiency is not only better, but also the efficiency of thewhole HVAC system. Actual payback time on the investment is just eightmonths. The numbers on the other two building retrofits in 2018 tell similar stories. Falcon Tower cut its pumps’ electricity consumption by 46%and Green Tower cut its use by 57%. Overall, the buildings cut their total energy savings – including that fromchillers, ventilation and lights – between 20-25%.

They also removed themodulating valve fromthe boiler. The CRIE pump controls the level in the steamboilers, going up and down in speed depending on demand. At the same time, the Grundfos pumps use built-in functions in the drive – that is limit-exceed and signal relay output – to control a bypass valve to secure flowthrough the economiserwhen the burner is running but the boiler is not


calling forwater. All control is handled by the drive at exactly the right time to have a safe and efficient boiler operation and reduce complexity. The outcome has been a 40 percent energy saving on one pump alone which equates to about 5.000 GBP a year. On top of that a 6%saving on the gas usage for the boiler as a result of themore stable level control.

Whale pays tribute to popular Parts Manager, Richard Crowton


Colleagues, friends and associates ofWhale Tankers’ PartsManager, Richard Crowton, are paying tribute to his life and career following his sad and untimely death after a recent short illness.


Having joinedWhale Tankers in 2014 as Parts Coordinator, Richardwent on to occupy the role of Deputy PartsManager before taking over the reigns ofWhale Tankers’ parts department in August 2019 following the retirement of his predecessor, Paul Sharpe. Since this time, Richard helped oversee the innovative development of theWhale Parts DirectWebsite, he and his teamhaving worked tirelessly to enhance its user- friendliness by successfully bringing on streaman innovative ‘LIVEChat’ facility in the midst of last year’s lockdown.


As Commercial Director, Chris Anderson said: “Havingworkedwith Richard on an almost day-to-day basis over recent years, Iwill always remember himwith great fondness and affection. Hewas admired by everyone in his team, and the progress that hewas

instrumental in delivering across theWhale parts operation, particularly in relation to its online and customer interface presence, has been hugely significant and is a tribute to his commitment and dogged determination to deliver on projects. Hewill be sorelymissed by all.”

Richard,who lived in Solihull, is survived by hiswife Sonia.
