CASE STUDIES

ADVERTORIAL

Project focus on strong teamwork and collaboration

AmajorUKUtility company engagedwith Primus Line’s local partner,McAllisterGroup, at an early stage to identify the urgent suitability of a rehabilitation solution for a twin sewer risingmains. Frominformation provided by the client and the portfolio of products availablewithin theMcAllister Group, Primus Line®was considered to be the most suitable due to the flexible nature of the material, its capability towithstand the operational conditions togetherwith the speed of installation.

The risingmains identified ran parallelwith each other but fromdifferent pumping stations, had a number of changes in direction both vertically

and horizontally, butmore significantly had been overbuilt to extend the original ‘A’ road with a newdual carriageway. The dual carriagewaywas built on a raised reinforced bank. Each of the risingmains had recent bursts that caused significant local disruption. Traditional open cutmethods to replace or repair themainswere considered earlier by the client as a last resort. Excavating near the reinforced bankwould add unnecessary risk and considerable cost to the project.

Primus Line® is a flexible slip-lining solution for the trenchless rehabilitation of pressure pipes. The systemconsists of a flexible aramid- reinforced liner and specially developed end fittings. Primus Line® is not bonded to the host pipe, is self-supporting and allows an annulus to remain between Primus Line® and the host pipe. Two small excavation pits or access points are sufficient for rehabilitating a line section.

Trenchless rehabilitationwith Primus Line®

McAllister Groupworked diligentlywith the asset owner, their supply chain and Primus Line to develop a fast track, effective and economic trenchless rehabilitation solution. The asset owner had already committed to set up flow management (tankers at the pumping station) prior toMcAllister Group carrying out the initial site survey. This enabled all stakeholders to define the final scope and to develop a seamless programme ofworks tomitigate unnecessary downtime.

The Primus Line®materialwas delivered directly to the site as two (DN400 and DN500) jointless lengths of flexible hose on transportation reels. Awinchwas set up at the receiving pitwith thewinchwire being installed through the host pipe. The complete 650metre lengthwas installed for each of the host pipes in a single installation; once

installed, the end connectorswere attached and a pressure test took place, witnessed by the client. Next, the linerwas cut and trimmed at an intermediate air valve chamber, end connectors fitted to facilitate the reinstatement of the air valves.

The rehabilitation of the two risingmains has secured both assets for an extended length of time. The collaborative nature inwhich all stakeholders approached the project “single organization” helped streamline each stage of the project fromconcept, through to procurement and to on-site delivery.

Working closelywith the client on design, planning and delivery contributed hugely to the project being delivered on time and to budget.

About Primus Line®

The Primus Line® systemis referenced in EN ISO 11295:2017 – classification and information on design and applications of plastics piping systems used for renovation and replacement. The Primus Line® systemalso complieswith the technical standard DVGWVP 643 – flexible textile-reinforced plastic inliner for pipe- relining of gas high pressure pipes. The system consists of an aramid-reinforced liner and specifically developed end fittings. The liner accommodates the operating pressure of the pipe, due to the reinforcement layer and does not bond to the host pipe. An annulus space remains. The liner is seamlesslymanufactured at an ISO9001 certified production plant in Germany and transported to the site on reels. Due to the flexibility of thematerial, the liner can traverse angles of up to 45 degrees, can be installed in lengths ofmore than 1,000min one pull, and has an installation speed of up to 600mper hour.
