This exciting, challenging and contemporary course utilises the health promoting principles of sport, coaching fitness, physical activity, nutrition and psychology to suggest preventions and offer moderations for a number of conditions including cancer, coronary heart disease and type II diabetes.
This course will allow you to take part in several projects, allowing you to work with clients from a variety of backgrounds and with differing needs and conditions.
As well as the scientific elements, the course also includes aspects of sport & health policy and health promotion strategies, including exercise prescription. The modules are constructed around the main scientific disciplines which underpin coaching, fitness development and health maintenance, as well as providing an insight into historical and organisational perspectives. The assessed work allows you to specialise in areas which are of particular interest to you. You will develop an array of academic, practical and interpersonal skills.
You are required to undertake a substantial work-based project in an aspect of the industry of your choice, and as a result of this and other industry related tasks, you will come into contact with and work with local employers.
Progression
Successful students may decide to apply to spend one further year1
on the BSc (Hons) Health and Fitness top-up
at Plymouth University, or the BSc (Hons) Health, Exercise and Physical Activity, the BSc (Hons) Coaching and Fitness Education, or BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning at the University of St Mark & St John in Plymouth in order to obtain a Bachelor Degree.

This new FdA offers an exciting opportunity for you to specialise in the study of early childhood whilst learning more about early years and primary education, curriculum, assessment, and related contemporary issues. This option would particularly suit prospective primary teachers, teaching assistants, and those specialising in the care and education of young children.
Contemporary, current, and with professional relevance, this course combines in-depth academic study with meaningful professional links and examples. You are able to collaborate, follow independent lines of enquiry, draw on guest speakers, events, and lecturers in order to further your knowledge and skills, and promote opportunities for professional development.
You will study six modules per year, including Young Children’s Welfare & Wellbeing, Multi-agency Working, International Education Perspectives and Key Concepts in the Education of Young Children.
You are given a strong core of knowledge in psychology, sociology, and the holistic development of children. You will also have the opportunity to specialise in areas by selecting topics of interest, furthering links to your professional development. Engaging lectures, collaborative and independent study, trips and events with Plymouth University, and guest speakers provide you with a uniquely supportive and challenging learning environment.

Successful students may be able to progress to a number of top-up awards1
, with the eventual qualification awarded
being either a BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies at Plymouth University, BA (Hons) Education Studies or BA (Hons) Professional Development (Early Childhood Studies) at Petroc.
