This course provides an exciting opportunity to study current issues related to the expanding sector of health and social care. This is the largest employment field in the South West region, and the programme has close links with local employment trends. The Foundation Degree provides an opportunity to study key topics within the health and social care field at degree level.
Health and social care share a common core of values, skills base and underpinning knowledge that is reflected in this programme of study.
Stage 1 of the course introduces appropriate professional skills including communication and developing graduate skills, as well as knowledge related to social change, health and social care legislation, social policy, lifespan development and understanding health and social care organisations.
In Stage 2, you will build on this knowledge and are encouraged to develop skills as an independent learner, studying issues of equality and managing resources as well as carrying out a work-based project and studies of professional practice.
Progression
Foundation degrees stand alone as a qualification in their own right, but there are a number of routes open to you once you have successfully completed the foundation degree. For example, you could continue to study at Petroc on the full-time or part-time BA (Hons) Professional Development (Health and Social Care) or BSc (Hons) Sociology at Plymouth University1
, use it to further your
existing career, start a new career pathway in the health and social care sector, continue onto a relevant Level 6 Honours Degree course (subject to eligibility) or apply to continue your studies on another related programme1

FdSc Human Biosciences
Foundation Degree Awarding Body: Plymouth University
This FdSc deepens your knowledge of human biology and related topics.
Throughout the course, you will study a wide range of subjects, including Anatomy, Human Life Cycle, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Human Physiology. You will develop skills and knowledge across the spectrum of subject disciplines, enabling an understanding of these and other key questions relating to human biology, health and disease.
The assessments vary from essays and presentations to lab reports and exams. Most modules have two assessments during the year as well as a final exam.
Progression
Foundation Degree graduates may be able to progress to the final year of the BSc (Hons) Human Biosciences or the BA (Hons) Biosciences (top-up) degree at Plymouth University, or complete their degree at an alternative institution1
. Jobs in areas such as biomedical and public
health laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, sales & marketing, health development, food quality control and teaching are some of the roles that would suit the FdSc graduate.
