THE ROLE OF GENETICS IN PERSONALIZED NUTRITION


Under the umbrella of nutritional genomics, professionals in the fields of nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics study the relationship between diet and genes. Nutrigenetics is an aspect of personalized nutrition that studies different responses—such as weight, blood pressure, plasma cholesterol, and glucose levels—to a specific type of diet, depending on the individual’s genotype. In contrast, nutrigenomics studies the interactions between diet and the expression of specific genes that keep the body healthy.23 “Nutritional genomics can be expected to revolutionize the way dietitians and other health professionals identify people with chronic diseases and treat those diseases,” Milly Ryan-Harshman, PhD, writes. “Understanding the science of nutritional genomics is important to dietitians and other health professionals because major scientific advancements such as this usually have a significant impact on ethics, policy, and practice.”24 According to Ruth DeBusk, PhD, RDN, and Yael Joffe, PhD,


RD, FACN, authors of It’s Not Just Your Genes, “We have the power to use the information encoded in our genes to help us make informed choices that will maximize our genetic potential.… Nutrition scien- tists, health care professionals, and every one of us has a stake in the continuing development of this field, based on our common desire to translate genetic information into practical prescriptions for person- alized health care.”25


Nutrition research continues to reveal the body’s complex
