WERKENDAM De Waal is renowned for its propulsion and manoeuvring technology. Starting in the 1980s, De Waal has built many steering units and rudders under the brand name ‘STUWA’, which is derived from STUurmachines WAal. Many regular and new clients are not familiar with this long-established relationship between De Waal and Stuwa, as the sale and service of maritime products of De Waal used to be carried out via a third party. As De Waal currently uses no agent, customers can approach the Werkendam directly for any question or instruction regarding propul- sion and manoeuvring technology.

De Waal in Werkendam is continuously developing innovative and sustainable solutions in the field of propulsion and manoeuvring technology. The company has, for example, decades of experience in building steering units for the (inland) shipping, off shore and fishing sectors, but also for super yachts. Indeed, the Werkendam firm serves the absolute top of the yacht building industry.


Marco de Waal: “We are, in fact, currently producing a complete steering unit for a 110 m yacht. In the maritime sector, STUWA® has built up an excellent reputation in: • high-quality balance rudders • optimal ‘fishtail rudders •

“We can supply the complete package including the accompanying steering gear”, says Marco. The STUWA® steering units of De Waal are reliable, high-quality, safe and userfriendly.


Direct contact As the products are currently no longer sold through an agent, purchasers/clients can contact De Waal directly for a solution to their manoeuvring needs. With De Waal now also assuming responsibil- ity for worldwide service maintenance, the lines of communication are short. And you can also benefit from the lower prices that we now off er. Customers who already own a STUWA® steering units or other product can now contact us directly.


Complete propeller shaſt systems While the propellers shaſt systems of De Waal have built up an excellent reputation in the inland shipping sector, more and more of these systems are now also being sold on the maritime market. Marco de Waal: “We can tool propeller shaſt s with a shaſt length of up to 12 m. These can be connected by a coupling flange to achieve the required length”. De Waal has several years ago developed an own patented propeller shaſt seal for the inland shipping sector: The STUWA® Original propeller shaſt seal. We worked hard on developing our second seal: the Majestic® seal, which is explicity intended for the maritime shipping sector. This Majestic Seal off ers various advantages compared with existing brands. Capital is available in 2 versions: Standard and Flex. The seal is suitable for ‘high speed’ vessels and can accommodate axial and radial shiſt s. In short; a seal for all conditions. This professional seal for the maritime shipping industry is off icially introduced in this spring.


Driven by ambition Although De Waal is active worldwide, its


ambition with STUWA® is to increase its international exposure. Indeed, the company was recently present at the ‘Navegistic’ trade fair in Paraguay. Rolf Maliepaard explains: “We off er worldwide service. Service provided by De Waal engineers, most of which have been with us for many years and have been trained by our driving gear builders. So we are ideally positioned to know which adjust- ments are required”. De Waal manufactures a 100% Dutch product, whereby the entire process is carried out and managed in-house. The company has three own quays and twee hoists in Werkendam. Especially useful for, e.g., off shore coasters that regularly need a ship’s hoist for performance of underwater work.


Europort De Waal is also present at Europort, where its shares a stand with SME (Stichting Maritime Equipment).

WERKENDAM De Waal staat bekend om haar voortstuwings- en manoeuvreer- technologie. Al sinds de jaren ’80 heeſt De Waal veel stuurmachines en roeren gebouwd die de merknaam ‘STUWA’ dragen, wat feitelijk staat voor STUurma- chines WAal. Dat De Waal en Stuwa al vanaf het begin met elkaar verbonden zijn is bij huidige en nieuwe klanten niet altijd duidelijk. Dit omdat de verkoop en service van de zeevaartproducten van De Waal voorheen via een andere firma liep. Tegenwoordig werkt De Waal niet meer via een tussenpersoon maar kan men rechtstreeks bij het Werkendamse bedrijf terecht voor elke vraag of opdracht op het gebied van voorstuwings- en manoeuvreer- technologie.

De Waal uit Werkendam is continu in ontwikkeling en staat bekend vanwege de innovatieve en tevens duurzame oplossingen als het gaat om de voorstuwings- en manoeu- vreertechnologie. Zo bouwt men al tientallen jaren stuurmachi- nes voor onder andere de zeevaart, binnen- vaart, off shore en visserij maar ook voor de superjacht industrie. Zo doet het Werkendam- se bedrijf zaken met de top van de jachten- wereld. Marco de Waal: “Momenteel is zelfs een compleet besturingssysteem voor een


110 meter jacht in productie”. In de zeevaart maakte STUWA® onder andere naam met: • De degelijke ‘balansroeren’ • Het optimale ‘fishtale roer’ • Het uitgekiende ‘flaproer’; met eventueel volledig geïntegreerde flapaandrijving


• De hoge snelheid ‘Naca profielroeren’ (met name voor de jachten)


“We leveren het complete pakket inclusief de bijbehorende stuurmachine”, aldus Marco. De STUWA® stuurmachines van De Waal zijn betrouwbaar, degelijk, veilig en gebruiks- vriendelijk.


Rechtstreeks contact Omdat de producten tegenwoordig niet meer verkocht worden via een tussenpersoon, kunnen inkopers/opdrachtgevers recht- streeks contact opnemen met De Waal voor hun oplossing op manoeuvreergebied. Ook wereldwijde service en onderhoud wordt nu rechtstreeks door De Waal gedaan, kortom; de lijntjes zijn kort. Dit kan bovendien ook een prijsconcurrerend voordeel opleveren, wegens de scherpere tarieven die gehanteerd kunnen worden. Klanten die al in bezit zijn van een STUWA® stuurmachine of ander product, kunnen nu ook direct contact opnemen.


Complete schroefasinstallaties De schroefasinstallaties van De Waal staan


goed bekend in de binnenvaart maar ook voor de zeevaart worden er de laatste tijd steeds meer assen verkocht. Marco de Waal: “We kunnen schroefassen behandelen tot een aslengte van 12 meter. Ze kunnen eventueel aan elkaar gekoppeld worden door middel van een koppelflens, om zo de soms beno- digde lange afstand te overbruggen”. Wat betreſt de schroefasdichtingen in de binnen- vaart heeſt De Waal al sinds jaren een eigen seal: De STUWA® Original schroefasseal. Naast deze bekende binnenvaartafdichting hebben we ook hard gewerkt aan de ontwikkeling van een tweede seal: de Majestic® seal. Deze is expliciet voor de zeevaart bedoeld. Deze Majestic Seal heeſt diverse voordelen ten opzichte van bestaande merken. Hij wordt verkrijgbaar in twee uitvoeringen: Standaard en Flex. De seal wordt ook geschikt voor ‘high speed’ boten en is geconstrueerd op axiale- én radiale verschuivingen. Kortom; een seal die alles aankan. In dit voorjaar werd deze professionele seal voor de zeevaart off icieel geïntroduceerd.


Volop ambitie De Waal is al wereldwijd actief maar heeſt de ambitie om met STUWA® nog bekender te worden. Zo stond men onlangs nog op de beurs ‘Navegistic’ in Paraquay. Rolf Malie- paard vult aan: “Wij bieden wereldwijde service. Service die geleverd wordt door De Waal engineers, waarvan de meesten al


jarenlang in dienst zijn en opgeleid door de eigen stuurmachinebouwers. We weten dus ook zeer goed welke eventuele aanpassingen er nodig zijn”. De Waal produceert een 100% Nederlands product, in eigen huis gebouwd, waardoor men alles in eigen hand houdt. Men beschikt over drie eigen kades en twee liſt en in Werkendam. Vooral handig voor bijvoor- beeld off shore coasters die regelmatig de scheepsliſt aandoen voor het verrichten van onderwaterwerk.
