important due to ecological, archaeological or landscape criteria. Trees not to be felled would be fenced off and worked around.
5.6.4.1.2 Public Highway 350. In the case of a section along a public highway, agreement would be reached with the Highways Authority regarding the length of road that can be worked at any one time and traffic management would be established and rolled along as construction proceeds.
351. In the roadway (street works), prior to trench excavation, a full services search would be completed and all existing services marked. Trench excavation would involve the cutting out of the existing tarmac surface and removal of the sub-base. Following this, the cable trench would be cut and prepared to receive the cable. The cable would then be installed and the trench backfilled. The road surface would be reinstated in accordance with the Highways Authority’s requirements.
5.6.4.1.3 Agricultural land 352. Where the cable route crosses agricultural or open land, the working width would be fenced off in advance of construction. Temporary access routes agreed in advance with the landowner would be established where required.
353. Cable markers may be installed along the cable route to identify that a HVDC cable is buried below.
5.6.4.2 Topsoil Stripping 354. Once the working width has been cleared of vegetation, the topsoil would be stripped. The precise method of stripping and the depth to which the soil would be stripped would be determined during detailed design. The topsoil would be stored to one side of the working width in such a way that it is not mixed with subsoil or creates a continuous obstruction. Typically, this would be in an earth bund of a maximum height of 2m to avoid compaction from the weight of the soil. Storage time would be kept to the practicable minimum to prevent the soil deteriorating in quality. Topsoil stripped from different fields would be stored separately, as would soil from hedgerow banks or woodland strips.
355. Particular care would be taken to ensure that the existing land drainage regime was not compromised as a result of construction. Land drainage systems would be maintained during construction and reinstated on completion. Temporary cut-off drains would be installed parallel to the trench-line, before the start of construction, to intercept soil and groundwater before it reaches the trench. These field drains
