• Creating a fairer society for all — working with a wide range of partners, we develop socially innovative ways of transforming the lives of everyone for the better; whether that is through influencing the private sector, transforming public sector service delivery or building capacity in the social enterprise sector
• Influencing policy and practice — using our knowledge and experience we will influence the policy and practice of social enterprise in the UK and beyond.
What social enterprise means for our students
One of only 30 Ashoka U Changemaker Campuses in the world
Ashoka U, 2014
At the University of Northampton, students are able to apply their learning in a way that not only secures them a job when they graduate, but also enables them to be resilient, innovative and socially aware individuals in the employment market. Through our commitment to social enterprise and innovation, our students develop the skills global employers seek; putting them ahead of the rest when it comes to securing employment. As the world of work continually changes, the need for graduates to be able to adapt, innovate and create new ways of working grows more important. Our Changemaker student experience equips our graduates with the skills to stay ahead and create their own path and careers throughout their lives.
The Enterprise Club runs the Enterprise Inc. programme specifically to help students learn how to set up a successful business. This award-winning programme, including grant and investment funding for some new businesses, has run since 2009. The programme’s offering was improved in 2014 to include preferential access to business incubation premises in the town and accelerated access to the Northamptonshire Growth Hub, a business support service for all businesses in the county. Whatever your business ambitions and whatever your degree, as a student of the University of Northampton you are assured of personal, professional and friendly support to help you succeed.

Changemaker Certificate
Exclusive to the University of Northampton, our Changemaker Certificate is a unique way for our students and graduates to stand out from the rest. All our students have the opportunity to complete the award up to ‘Gold’ level gaining a ‘Bronze’ and ‘Silver’ Certificate as they progress. Over 300 students, staff and community leaders are already actively involved.
The Changemaker Certificate focuses on developing an understanding of how students can solve social problems and become change leaders of the future. This extra-curricular award allows students to develop an idea and address a problem in the world through a new social venture; whether that is a business in its own right or a different way of working that changes the way people view that problem. The Certificate is awarded in recognition of problem solving skills, creativity and the ability to innovate by developing new collaborations and applying learning in new ways. Students are mentored by other students, with support from the academic staff across the University through an online portal.
You will be able to network with other students across the world through our Dialogue Café conferencing system. You will have the opportunity to go on eight-week summer adventures in Kenya and other countries. As a graduate of the programme you will be internationally recognised by Ashoka U as a Changemaker of the future. You will have the opportunity to plan and pilot a new product or business idea with the support of the University’s finance and design experts, so that you are ready to launch your new venture when you graduate.
