ii UK Focus - Air Monitoring Air Quality Sensing Made Easy

The intelligent air quality sensing modules from SGX Sensortech makes the monitoring of air quality in the car, the home, the workplace or the environment hassle free. There is an increasing interest in the quality of air that we breathe, whether in the home, at work, at school or outside. A significant contributor to poor air quality is a group of low boiling-point gases known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These gases occur naturally, are produced by human metabolism or result from an industrial or combustion process. There is a growing level of evidence that VOCs contribute to the incidence of respiratory disease and associated healthcare costs. In the workplace, it is believed that they adversely impact absenteeism and can cause significant loss in productivity as a result of what is known as sick building syndrome. Even if harmless to humans, many VOCs are highly odorous and contribute to unpleasant smells.

The new VZ-86/9 air quality module from SGX Sensortech makes the process of detecting VOCs simple. Using innovative metal oxide semiconductor chemistry supported by a micro-electromechanical structure (MEMS), the core sensing technology provides a swift response to changes in the levels of a wide range of VOCs and hence air quality. The technology which has been produced in high volumes and to rigorous quality control by SGX for more than 10 years is already well established in the automotive industry where it is linked with car HVAC systems to control air intakes. The low power module incorporates an advanced signal processing algorithm to produce either an I2C or pulse-width modulated output. In addition, the proprietary algorithm automatically compensates for small changes in sensor output over time and provides calibration free operation.

Not only does the sensor produce an effective means of monitoring the level of VOCs in the air, it also provides an equivalency signal for the concentration of carbon dioxide present; CO2

is commonly used as a proxy for air quality. GAS PUMPS LIQUID PUMPS

The sensing module is ideal for the following applications: Occupancy detection to reduce energy costs by the intelligent control of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, Vehicle cabin air quality, Bathroom and kitchen fan control, and Air cleaners and purifiers.

Quantitech is delighted to announce that the Gasmet Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS II e) and the portable (DX4000) FTIR analysers have been awarded an MCERTS certificate (Sira MC030014/08) demonstrating compliance with the MCERTS Performance Standards EN15267-3 & QAL 1 as defined in EN 14181. The certificate demonstrates enhanced performance across an extended range of gases.

MICRO GAS PUMPS LAB EQUIPMENT

The MCERTS certificate confirms the performance of Gasmet’s FTIR analysers for the measurement of CO, NO, SO2

, NO2 NH3 , H2 O, HF, CO2 , O2 , CH4 , N2 O, HCl, and CHOH. However, Quantitech MD

Ken Roberts says: “Customers will be particularly interested in this certificate because of the exceptionally good figures for Hydrogen Fluoride, and the data for Nitrogen Oxide and Formaldehyde are also very significant because no other FTIR is certified down to 150 mg/m3 approved for Formaldehyde at all.”

FTIR is an extremely popular multiparameter emissions monitoring technology; able to monitor almost any gaseous compound. This means for example, that the Gasmet CEMS II e and the DX4000 are able to provide monitoring data for up to 50 compounds simultaneously.

The technology in all of Gasmet’s FTIR analysers is essentially the same and benefits from continual product development. It is this work that has enabled the dramatic improvements that are demonstrated by the MCERTS award.

Unique Dust Monitors for Any Application

The latest TSI SidePak Personal Aerosol Monitors have been added to the Ashtead Technology range of particulate matter (PM) monitors. “We were so impressed with the unique features of these instruments, that we immediately added them to both our rental and sales portfolios,” says Ashtead’s Regional Sales Manager Josh Thomas. “Many occupational exposure applications are potentially explosive and require intrinsically safe (IS) instruments, so we foresee a strong demand for the SidePak AM520i, especially because it also takes measurements for a number of key PM fractions, including Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM).”

DPM has long been a concern in underground and confined space applications where diesel engines represent an air quality threat to staff. However, the effects of traffic pollution are now better understood and in the UK for example, over 29,000 premature deaths per year have been attributed to airborne PM; much of which is derived from diesel engines. “The increased number of PM fractions that the AM520i is able to measure, coupled with its portability, logging capability and IS certification makes this an extremely flexible instrument – ideal for an enormous variety of applications including planning and development projects, foundries, construction, chemical plants, refineries, petrochemical, power and utilities, aerospace, maritime, mining and studies on exposure to vehicle pollution,” Josh adds.

The AM520 is a small, portable, battery-powered, data-logging, light-scattering laser photometer that provides real-time aerosol mass concentration readings of dusts, fumes, mists, smoke and fog within the breathing zones of workers. Newly designed inlet conditioners increase the mass concentration capability and provide size fraction cut points for PM10, PM4 (Respirable), PM5 (China Respirable), PM2.5, PM1 and 0.8µm Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM).

Explaining the advantages of real-time monitoring, Josh says: “Immediate readings improve safety and avoid the delays, hassle, consumables and costs involved with the collection of samples for laboratory gravimetric analysis.”

Weighing just 620g, with audio and visual alarms, the AM520 can be worn on a user’s belt with an inlet tube sampling close to the breathing zone. Impressively, it is able to operate on internal rechargeable batteries for up to 20 hours, which means that it can easily run for an entire shift. Warm up takes about one minute and a Zero Filter is provided for a daily calibration check.
