Air Monitoring 19 New Optical Fine Dust Sensor

The fine dust sensor FDS 15, from Dr. Födisch Umweltmesstechnik AG (Germany), is an optical sensor for continuous measurement and control of fine dust contents. It can be integrated into several applications. By means of the FDS 15 it is possible to determine the current fine dust loading of the environment and make out health hazards.

Application examples include: monitoring of fine dust in the range of production (workshops, factory buildings etc.), monitoring of room air quality in offices and public institutions (hospitals, schools etc.) or in the private domain, monitoring of ambient air, and upgrading of weather stations.

The determination of the dust content in the FDS 15 is based on the method of scattered light measurement. The sucked air is pre-heated to 50 °C. Thereby flow enforcement takes place via the integrated fan. The velocity of the measuring gas is chosen in a way that ensures particles are determined representatively. For the analysis of alveolar particle fractions (PM2,5) an integrated pre-sep arator is used.

In the FDS 15 a periodic control and correction of zero point and reference point is carried out. By evaluation of the internal measuring signals a high zero point stability is achieved. 39706pr@reply-direct.com

Determination of TOC in Stacks with an Innovative and Easy to Carry FID Analyser

PROBLEM: The Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions of industrial chimney’s are becoming issues of global importance, and having accurate knowledge about how to test VOC turns into a strategic issue. VOC emissions are quantified and monitored according to the standard EN 12619, using an FID analyser which uses hydrogen and other reference gases in pressurised cylinder. Operators must then approach the sampling point, often placed several meters from the ground, climbing chimneys of industrial settlements with instruments and cylinders.

Is it possible to make this job easier and safer?

SOLUTION: Using the Polaris FID analyser from Pollution Srl (Italy), it is possible to carry out VOC monitoring according to EN 12619 without lifting the accessories and heavy weights typically involved with an FID analyser.

So far, the portability of such an analyser was a feature of FID’s designed for fugitive emission monitoring from valves, flanges, gaskets, pumps or compressors monitoring. Moreover, when VOCs are measured in chimneys according to EN 12619, the analyser must be much more robust and fully heated to 180°C, leading to an increase in size and weight.

Polaris FID analyser complies with this standard regulation, but what is really a breakthrough, and cutting-edge, is the unmatched portability and the next generation technology.

In addition, the Polaris FID is a new concept and incorporates into chassis these important features: two rechargeable batteries that last more than three hours; a zero air cylinder for 10 hours of continuous measurement; a span gas cylinder useful for tens calibrations and, last but not least, an advanced metal hydrides cartridge for hydrogen storage to fuel the flame detector. However, the hydrogen source is not the ordinary pressurised cylinder but a small steel cartridge that weighs only 500 grams and which allows to store hydrogen for 30 hours of continuous measurements. Furthermore, as hydrogen is chemically bonded to a special metal alloy inside the cartridge, there is no risk of leakage and explosion: hydrogen cylinder will not be a concern anymore.

In conclusion, the Polaris FID incorporates, in just 13 kg and a compact body, everything needed for a measuring campaign, making it the best choice for operators who have to climb on the chimneys of industrial settlements easily and safely.

The mobile multi component analyser MCA 14 m, from Dr. Födisch Umweltmesstechnik AG (Germany), is an extractive, continuous measuring system. It serves the continuous emission measurement of pollutants in flue gas (e.g. CO, NO, N2 CH4 O2

, HCl, SO2 ) and the measurement of CO2 as well as the continuous process control.

The mobile MCA 14 m is applicable all-purpose for measurement of emissions, raw gases or processes. In operational emission measurement systems, amongst others, it serves the exhaust concen tration control in combustion plants with different types of fuel, the thermal waste treatment, the combustion optimisation and the process management control. Using the MCA 14 m, up to twelve infrared gas components can be detected simultaneously. All con centrations requiring specifications are evaluated internally. Thereby, the photometer control, sensor evaluation and interface communication, amongst others, are realised.

The unique characteristic of devices of this power class is that for operation of the MCA 14 m there is no instrument air supply necessary. The zero point setting is carried out with ambient air.
