Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch Just a day before I sat down to write this update,

and thinking about what was the most relevant topic, I read on Broadstone Community Group that one of my neighbours had just been burgled. Their garage was broken into and it seems the thieves were targeting tools.

I understand from the Police that this is becoming more common because tools are expensive, hold their value as second hand and are easy to sell on. Many of us also don’t have a clue what is inside our shed, garage or greenhouse, so these crimes can often go unnoticed for weeks before we go to use them, and even then we initially assume that we have put them somewhere different for the winter.

Whilst many people mark their property, this only reduces the chances of criminals being able to sell on the goods, they won’t know your items are marked until after the theft, so prevention is more effective.

Make sure your shed or garage is locked when not in use. Invest in a quality padlock so that burglars are put off. Make sure strangers cannot walk straight into your back garden – put in a side gate, and keep that locked from the garden side. If you are thinking of changing your drive – or your side path – consider gravel. The noise from walking on this will deter

criminals, their attitude will be that there is BOUND to be an easier home to burgle a few doors down.

Finally, join Neighbourhood Watch. Evidence shows that an active group reduces crime. Members keep an eye out for each other and the criminals assume that members will have taken more precautions. If you are not a member of Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch, please email me and, for just £1 PER YEAR, we can sign up your household.

Where possible, we try to ensure that areas with a substantial membership have street signs on the lampposts. During the switch over to new LED lighting, some of these signs have disappeared. If the sign in your street has gone missing, please email me and we will ask the council to have it reinstated as soon as possible.
