Councillor Update

Our March surgery was extremely busy with a record number of residents raising a wide range of issues including litter, access to the Nuffi eld recycling centre, car parking, an untidy site, business rates, potential boundary changes, overhanging trees, disability access to the trailway, pot holes and white lines, surface runoff and the No.3 bus.

Dorset County Council recently withdrew the subsidy for the No.3 bus through Corfe Mullen. This will affect Broadstone residents north of Springdale Road, for whom this is the only bus. The loss of this subsidy means that the route beyond Broadstone to Wimborne will not be sustainable. Vikki has written to residents outlining the issues and explaining the actions we are taking. Together with Corfe Mullen County Councillor Susan Jefferies, Vikki has met with senior staff at More Bus to discuss ways forward. The company is committed to fi nding a solution that retains a bus service for the area. It will mean changes to the timetable with knock-on effects for the Broadstone-Poole section of the route. We have received confi rmation that More Bus will continue to run the current service until the Autumn, while various options are assessed. Vikki and Susan will be meeting with More Bus again shortly to discuss options for a long-term solution, though some cuts are inevitable. Vikki would like to thank all those residents who have been in touch with their own suggestions. You will be kept informed.

The Call-in Committee met on 20th February to discuss the latest round of toilet closures and Mike was again the lead speaker. The main concerns centred on the proposals to close the Charborough Road, Baiter, and Haven toilets. The three Conservative members of the committee supported all the closures and Cabinet, at its meeting on 14th March, confi rmed the closures. With no other toilets in the vicinity, the closure of the Charborough Road toilets could have a big impact upon those using the recreation ground, especially during sporting events. We understand talks are taking place with Broadstone Cricket Club with a view to the transfer of the toilets, but the likely outcome is, at this stage, far from clear.

The extortionate increases to car parking charges come into effect on 3rd April. We hope the knock-on effects won’t be as bad as expected and would urge residents to continue to shop locally. Broadstone has an excellent selection of independent shops and it would be a tragedy to lose any of them.

The Council is planning to share services with Bournemouth, irrespective of the proposed merger, in an attempt to save money. It was revealed at Cabinet on 14th March that Poole would take responsibility for Library Services across both towns, while Bournemouth would manage Tourism. The full details of these proposals will not be available until later in the year, but following Mike’s questioning of Cabinet, assurances have been given that the proposals would be presented to the appropriate scrutiny committees before the fi nal decisions are made.

Our next surgeries are: 1st April and 6th May in Broadstone Library commencing at 10am.
