K9 Service Dog Memorial
Palm Harbor:
Pinellas County Sheriff ’s Deputy Anthony LoRusso and his K9 partner Mars honored Koda, his previous K9 partner, during the annual K9 Service Dog Memorial at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens. “Koda was always in overdrive and never missed a thing. I missed some things, but he always pulled me through. I’ll never forget my partner. I miss him every day, still,” said Officer LoRusso. There are nearly 60 K9 service dogs currently interred at
Curlew Hills Memory Gardens in the Garden of Heroes. Curlew Hills Memory Gardens has one of Florida’s only authentic pet cemeteries and donates burial plots to all service animals of law enforcement agencies.

At GhostPupsters Academy, 46 adoptable dogs, fresh from Paws on Parole, were introduced. The prison-based dog training program pairs adoptable dogs from Alachua County Animal Services with inmates from the Florida Department of Corrections and the Alachua County Jail. The dogs live with and are trained by the inmates over the eight-week program, learning the basic skills
necessary to pass the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. The adoption fee for the dogs is only $30 and includes spay/neuter, microchip and vaccines.

Central Park was the beautiful setting for the 13th Annual Doggie Art Festival, presented by The Doggie Door boutique. Pet-related artists, vendors and rescue organizations participated. Proceeds benefited the Sebastian Haul Fund, an organization that helps Greyhounds reach their new families. We were particularly smitten with artist Meryl Rachlin’s custom 3D pet portraits (above left). Volunteers from the Harbor House Paws for Peace program attended. Harbor House is a domestic violence shelter, offering the only on- site kennel in Central Florida for the pets of domestic abuse survivors.
