Imagine the power a dog has, looking into the eyes of a child who has been abused. Now, imagine what happens when the same child realizes the therapy dog looking into her eyes was once an abused being as well; hurt at the hands of those she once trusted. Kim Skrovanek is the founder/president of Humane Education Connection, a non- profit that brings healing to abused animals and children. Using trained rescue dogs, Kim and her team visit children who have been removed from an abusive situation and are tem- porarily living in safe houses. The kids relate to the dogs and les- sons in forgiveness and goodness are taught to them. Kim recalls
an instance where a child who had been mute since her admission to the shelter, spoke for the first time when she saw Olivia, one of Kim’s dogs. There is a strong link between animal and child abuse. Research has shown that children who live with or witness abuse in the home are more likely to repeat the abuse as adults, creating a cycle of abuse. Humane Education Connection “Canines Helping Kids In Crisis” programs are helping to break the cycle of abuse and future ani- mal abuse. The programs use fun, interactive education- al activities for children that helps build character, renews self-esteem and confidence, promotes the humane treatment of animals and a respect for all life,
