Should your veterinarian have needed additional ther-
apies, Scout may have also been treated with Immunotherapy, Tamiflu, antacids, blood transfusion, etc as needed. Luckily, Scout didn’t’ need those options. Scout stayed with your veterinarian and his competent
team for 3 days before coming home. It was touch and go in the beginning, but Scout made a complete recovery. Your veterinarian knew that with aggressive treatment, 80- 90% of dogs will survive. Without aggressive treatment, death rates as high as 91% have been reported in experi- mentally affected dogs. So, prognosis is very good with aggressive and prompt treatment. Poor prognosis if not treated appropriately. Your veterinarian discussed Parvo vaccination for
future reference. All puppies should be vaccinated for Parvovirus every 3-4 weeks, between the ages of 6 – 16 weeks of age. The last puppy parvovirus vaccine should be administered between 14-16 weeks of age to avoid the antibiotics from the mother dog inactivating the vaccina- tions. Then your dog should receive a booster vaccination 1 year later. Your veterinarian will then discuss future vac- cinations, schedule and/or titer testing as your dog ages. Your veterinarian warned that all puppies need to under- go this series of vaccinations as Parvo infection can cause great illness and possibly death. There are also the financial considerations as well, as it is far less expensive to properly vaccinate your dog than to treat, as in Scout’s case. You honestly told your veterinarian that you’re con-
cerned about possible side effects of vaccinations. Your veterinarian did a great job in informing you that vaccina- tions are an important step in protecting your pet (and even your family). It is common for your dog to feel some mild side effects from vaccination. These usually start within a few hours of the vaccination and are often mild and usually do not persist for more than a few days. This is a normal response by your dog’s immune system to develop immunity. Some of these side effects may be low grade fever, decreased activity and/or appetite and mild discomfort or swelling at the injection site. Rarely, an allergic reaction may occur with signs of facial swelling, vomiting or diarrhea, itching, breathing difficulties and collapse. These are very rare occurrences with today’s modern purified vaccinations.
Therefore, the benefits of
vaccine protection far out weight the slight risk of signifi- cant reactions. Avoid the opportunistic infection that can occur when
choosing to avoid the vaccine protocols. Get those core vaccines, which are very important in developing your pet’s immune system. If at a later date you choose not to vacci- nate, measuring vaccine titers can be a viable option. U
