Frost, a professor of psychology at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, said there are differences between those who hoard only things and those who hoard animals. “In animal hoarding, we see a lack of ability to recog- nize things that really comes close to being delusional. Hoarders believe that they, better than anyone else, can care for their animals. Some might not be able to see that their animals are dying or have already died.” To Dr. Byrd, animal hoarding is abuse. “These people still
think they are doing good for the animals as the watch them suffer and die. While that may in fact be an illness, they are watching an animal suffer. Suffering is still suffering.” Animal cruelty cases are not necessarily rising, but aware-

with fish and just a few cats. He relies on trusted pet sitters whenever he is called away from home to a crime scene. As a big fan of the Miami Vice television series, he named three of his cats after the characters from the 80s show: Crocket, Tubbs, and Elvis. Thanks to his pets, he's able to maintain a sense of humor in his not-so-funny world of crime against the voiceless.
