FOUR HUNDRED POUNDS OF LOVE.
from a book of poems by Anne McTigue for her granddaughter, Harper.
If I had four hundred pounds of gold They’d call me pretty rich. Four hundred pounds of poison ivy Would make me really itch. Four hundred pounds of jelly Would be so very sticky. Four hundred pounds of candy Might make me really sicky. Four hundred pounds of gum That’d take time to do the chewing. Four hundred pounds of doves That might be too much cooing. But four hundred pounds of dog I have that and wish for more. Some see four hundred pounds of drool And hair upon my floor. They don’t understand Why I prefer dogs to gold or treat or dove. Four hundred pounds of dog Is four hundred pounds of love.
