Around Kingswear
On the Swings By the time you read this there will
(hopefully) be a playground installed at Waterhead Creek’s Jubilee Park. The playground is designed to appeal to younger children and will be used by local kids and visiting families, not to mention the grandchildren of our residents. It is also hoped that Kingswear School will find its facilities helpful as a normal part of their outdoor curriculum. As Kingswear folk will know there has been a considerable battle to win this playground but three public meetings have overwhelmingly supported its creation, so let’s hope that it is a success and that lots of young children have much fun and exercise on it. Since the little dears do not come fitted with an ‘off’ button, unfortunately, this at least will be a good way to wear them out before bedtime, or indeed any time! Come back laudanum, all is forgiven!
Pontoons Only Kingswear Rowing Club needs a new
pontoon to go outside the clubhouse. If anyone has a spare pontoon down the back of the sofa do let them know but just in case that doesn’t happen they need to raise oodles of dosh in order to provide a new one. To this end they are organising a series of events which hopefully will be great fun, very enjoyable for everyone, not just rowing club members, to raise enough money. Keep your eyes on this page to find out about these super events.
The first is a concert to be given in the village hall on Saturday January 21st
.
Now this really is a cracker, not to be missed at any cost: Bob Thomson from Paignton and Maggie Duffy from Brixham (pictured opposite) are teaming-up to provide one

January 2017. Don’t miss it or there will be tears.
seriously good duo. They are both highly-talented performers and have appeared often on local radio, and sound fantastic together. Bob Thomson sounds more like Mark Knopfler at times than Mark Knopfler does! Their blend of rock, folk and blues will wow even the most wooden of us. And some of us are planks! Nearer to the date, tickets will be available from the usual local stockists (I dare to presume the post office, the shop and Alexa Paddock.) So please, please support the concert, it really does need to be a sell-out. Prices will be advertised on posters in the usual places nearer the time but I can tell you it will start at 7:30pm and will be in the village hall on Saturday 21st
Father Christmas It is the nature of topical reporting
that some events are written about for publication before they actually happen.
Well, I mean, it IS Kingswear ... However, barring disasters, I can report that Father Christmas is to/actually did appear outside Kingswear Station at six o’clock on Friday December 2nd
. Let’s proceed
historically: A great tribe of children joined with their teachers and parents outside the station and were over-joyed to witness the appearance of Father Christmas at the crack of six. There followed the usual barely-controlled stampede of children through the raging traffic in to the village hall, where they consumed vast quantities of totally unsuitable food and drowned happily in sickly squash. Presents were enjoyed by all and the children were delighted to see their hero once again. It’s just amazing how the old boy gets around isn’t it? You see him everywhere but I don’t know how he does it. Perhaps we should have him in charge of Brexit. He could hardly do worse, etc, etc...
