Some of you may recall my article about the pleasures of Slapton Ley which contained a quote from William Henry Davies: “What is this life if, full of care, we have no
time to stand and stare.” A no more apt place to take this on
board is Dyers Hill perched high above Dartmouth with extensive views of the River Dart and Kingswear. A little effort is required in getting to the top but you are very quickly and amply rewarded.
Dyers Hill is certainly a
place for all seasons where you can patiently wait for the low streaking sun to penetrate the autumn valley mist or watch a lone fishing boat head out to sea whilst the rest of the town seems to sleep. In the height of summer, it seems more like dodgems with yachts heading up and down the river competing against the transverse direction of the ferries. Admirable sea craft and patience are generally on display but occasionally a short blast of a hooter is required to restore order!
