Chromebooks - The Next Generation of Laptops and loads in under 10 seconds.


Traditionally, all computers have run Apple or Microsoft operating systems. They have hard drives inside them to store information and have large processors and amounts of memory to keep them running at a fast rate. There is, however, another choice - the Google Chromebook - and it’s becoming quite popular.


What is a Chromebook?


The Chromebook doesn’t run Microsoft Windows or Apple software - it runs Google Chrome as an operating system (not to be confused with Google Chrome which is used as a web browser). Chromebook’s look similar to a laptop but are slimmer and lighter. They are very fast and have a small hard drive because, quite simply, they don’t need much storage space. The principle of the Chromebook is that it’s all online. Yes, that means you have to store all your information online - documents, pictures, music, video. It also means you have to have a wifi or mobile connection for your Chromebook to work.


The Good Points


• It stores almost no information internally so it is lightning fast.


• Chromebooks have virus protection built in and it doesn’t slow it down.


• Because the operating system is so streamlined, it starts


• System updates take seconds not hours and are free. •


It comes with free software for letters,


spreadsheets and picture management. • All your information is saved online, so it is never lost - and it is accessible from anywhere. • They are amazing value


- £200 will buy you a good Chromebook.


Chromebook Differences


• You have to be online all the time. If you are using it at home, you are on wifi


anyway. Away from the home, you may be able


to use your mobile data allowance to “tether” to the Chromebook, giving it an internet connection.


• You save all your data online within a storage area called Google Drive.


You may be familiar with Google operating systems already. They write the Android system on mobile phones and tablets. Chromebooks are, in many ways, just an extension of this. It’s a new way to think about computing. At it’s heart, is the reality that we do most things online - email, shopping, facebook, web browsing. And in the same sense, we are almost never without an internet connection! Combine that with the price and Chromebooks look set to become an increasingly popular choice in the future.
