Dartmouth Indoor Pool

It took over a year to build, cost £2.3 million and it’s 25 metres long! Dartmouth Indoor Pool is finally open for everyone to enjoy. It’s been an ambition for the local community since the 1950s, and many obstacles have stood in the way over the past 70 years. The project really got going in 2008 thanks to a new Trust and a strong team of helpers – By the Dart caught up with a few of them and asked what it’s like to get to the finishing line…

Inteviews by Steph Woolvin. SIR GEOFFREY NEWMAN

Chairman of the Board of Trustees I am thrilled to be at this stage, it’s complete and it definitely has the wow factor. The first time I saw water in the pool with light pouring through the window I thought ‘it really does look very inviting!’ I can’t wait to see the community jumping in and making full use of it. I’ve been involved with the project since 2004 and previous to that I chaired the outdoor pool. It has certainly been a white-knuckle ride at times. Waiting for responses from local authorities about funding was certainly nerve-racking. But we all worked really well as a team dealing with every issue as it arose with professionalism and patience. I was quite overcome by the tremendous support we received from local people; they got us off the ground and kept us going. As for my part, there were lots of meetings, site visits and paperwork and it certainly took up a lot of my time but I have enjoyed it. As we live so close to water I think it’s vital that everyone gets the chance to learn to swim in a safe environment.
