ollowing a restructure of Devon County Council youth services in October 2014, the Dartmouth and District Youth Partnership (DDYP) formed with

a commitment to keep youth services going in the town. Made up of representatives from the Dartmouth Town Council, Flavel Church, Anglican Parish of Dartmouth and local residents, the DDYP has been instrumental in raising funds to help keep the Ivy Lane Centre open on Thursday nights for young people in Dartmouth since November 2014. The Thursday night sessions, which attracts over forty teenagers each week, offers young people music, cook- ing, crafts, games, discussion workshops and sport activities. Beginning early this year,

the DDYP started working in partnership with the Youth Genesis Trust to help further develop youth services in Dartmouth. Youth Genesis has a successful track record of working with churches, the local authority and community groups in Torbay to grow sustainable youth services which are designed and led by young people and supported by local volunteers. With the DDYP as the fundraising partner, Youth Genesis has taken over the delivery of the sessions at the Ivy Lane Centre on Thursdays and has set up a new youth drop-in called ‘The Point’ at St Clements Church Hall in Townstal on Friday nights. To help make the projects become sustainable in the long term, Youth Genesis has successfully recruited a team of twelve volunteers who give their time on a weekly basis to help run the youth sessions. ‘The Point’ Youth Drop-In is FRee to access and offers young people a safe place to hang out where they can meet new friends, enjoy games, music, engage in workshops as well as access hot drinks and a tuck shop. The team of volunteers, who attended a six week training course that has equipped them to deal with some of the challenges that young people may face, provide a range of support for young people as well as lead activities and sessions that enable young people to learn in an informal environment. As well as ‘The Point’ Youth Drop-In, a team of street-

base workers have been taking to the streets of Townstal on Friday nights with an aim of working with young people who are hanging out on the streets and in parks. The team of three Youth Workers provide confidential information and support and help to ensure that young people are safe and are not getting involved in anti-social behaviour or crime. This year, the Streetbase teams suc-

cessfully supported just over 500 young people at the Dart Music Festival and Dartmouth Regatta, helping to ensure their safety whilst out on the streets. The Dartmouth and District Youth

Partnership will be working with Youth Genesis over the next year to raise more funds so that young people can access trips and activities that will enhance their learning experience. Youth Genesis will also be looking for more people to help get involved in the projects – without the team of volunteers both sessions wouldn’t be able to take place every week!
