here and if you don’t have your best limbo-legs ready, you might find yourself coming dangerously close to disrupting a line of fragile chrysalises which adorn the bamboo canes strung up from the ceiling. Beyond the hothouse, the otters have their enclo-

sures outside by the river – a welcome breath of fresh air. There are walkways under the pools so that you can watch them swimming their graceful loop-the-loops (if it takes their fancy) but by far the best time to see them up close and personal, is at feeding time, which happens a couple of times a day. We went to the 2pm event and in my standard failure at being a mother, I’d managed to overlook giving Rafa his own lunch beforehand. Need- less to say, watching these wonderful creatures enjoying a meat feast from their keeper sent him slightly doolally and we ended up running our own feeding frenzy in unison, perched on the enclosure fence. In retrospect, I don’t know which was the more entertaining specta- cle; an apparently desperate child with whole satsuma shoved in his mouth, caked in petit-filous, or the otters. I do know which made more of a mess.

Pennywell Farm, just off the A38 near Dean Prior Adults entry: £13.95 Child: £9.95 (family ticket £26.50) Under 3’s go free More of a heads-up for this one as I’ve not yet been

myself – but I know families who rave about it and go at least once a month in season. Also near Buckfastleigh, it’s slightly more expensive than Prickly Ball – or the Rare Breeds at Totnes for that matter (I’ve covered this in a previous article) but it’s larger in terms of size and therefore, I imagine, has a bit more to offer. The reason it’s caught our attention is because whilst they close for the winter until February, they run a live nativity in the build up to Christmas, with real animals and visiting children filling the human roles. Finally, that chance to see your little angel kitted out with wings and halo for all to see. Failing that, there’s always a Herod costume. Book the 9.45am performance on certain dates and

you’ll be treated to breakfast with Santa as part of the deal. For more information and ticket details visit www. pennywellfarm.co.uk and follow the rather obvious links.
