Sherry Tutored Tasting

In October we hosted an informative tasting from Tim Holt of Barbadillo, a sherry producer from Jerez in Southern Spain. Established in 1821, Barbadillo has sold wines from their ancient bodegas (cellars) ever since and were voted one of the world’s top wineries in 2015. Tim explained that it is the combination of the hot Spanish sun and the west winds sweeping off the Atlantic sea that gives their sherry its soul.

During the workshop we learnt about the solera system of blending the wine and the influence of local airborne yeasts on its maturation. Very briefly here are a handful of examples of foods that match particularly well with sherry: the fresh acidity and salty characteristics of Manzanilla go with salted nuts, cured hams and seafood; an Amontillado can enhance the warmth of a winter soup or stew due to its strong acidity and slight sweetness. Pedro Ximenez takes the final bow at the end of a meal, a dark treacly sherry with its intense luscious flavours of raisins and molasses. Try it poured over home-made vanilla ice-cream and enjoy the wonderfully decadent combination!

Based on the great feedback from those who attended, we will definitely be inviting Tim to present again as it was such an enlightening and fun evening.

What do you drink with your picnic?

There’s not many weekends during the year when we can bask in a Mediterranean climate with reassuringly settled weather, yet the 2016 Dart Music Festival was blessed with wall to wall sunshine for three days and a bunch of highly talented musicians entertained young and old, creating a special community atmosphere.

CELLAR RECOMMENDATIONS for Picnics

House White - Tariquet Classic £6.50 House Red - Grille Rouge £6.50 Prosecco - Prosecco is £9.00

With the popping of corks, there was a great festival feeling throughout Dartmouth that weekend particularly in the Mayor’s Avenue Gardens as dozens of music-lov- ers sat around on an array of colourful rugs surrounded by many other like-minded people. Food and wine were being handed around from well-stocked picnic baskets as everyone soaked up the sunshine and the sounds coming from the bandstand. This tranquil scene of an early summer reminded us of how lovely it is to share a bottle of wine with friends whether in a stunning setting by the River Dart or in our own back gardens.

Elegant whites match perfectly with summer salads and fish, punchy reds compliment any grilled food and our versatile Provence Rosé can be drunk throughout the day.
