forced to do the job in the August heat, the paint did dry a little too quickly and, up close, faint brush- marks can be seen on either side of the hull (more so on the side I tipped off). But all in all we did a pretty good job, impressive enough for one yachtsman passing the shed to mistake Leonie for a fibreglass boat. It was Leonie’s eye-catching colour


that gained Carl his yard nickname – Papa smurf – when his legs turned squall blue after sanding the hull. My boat jobs included sanding


and re-varnishing the mast, boom and new toe-rail capping; anti- fouling; masking and painting the boot-topping and the cove line; repainting the coach roof and vaccuming dust from the deck at the end of each day. Other duties included fetching take-away frappes’ each morning, laundry, shopping for provisions in Preveza via the yard’s free mini-bus service, sweating over a hot camping stove to cook suppers and washing the dishes from a stand pipe in the dusty yard.


It took Bob nearly three months


to complete the repairs. He did a fantastic job, and she looks as good, if not better, than she did before. The total bill, paid in full by our insurers, was £26,000. We were nearly ready to launch. Guy swung by again to help Carl re-step and re-rig the mast and at the end of August we were back in the water. Being a wooden boat,


Moored at Kalamos There were a few more supposedly


straight-forward jobs remaining that frustratingly turned into more complicated tasks than they should have been and kept us moored to the yard quay for a couple more days. Bad luck struck again when I fell over and badly sprained my wrist the night before Leonie’s first voyage since hobbling into Aktio Marina back in April. But that didn’t stop us enjoying the last few weeks of summer, sailing to remote and peaceful anchorages where we did nothing all day but relax and swim. We also revisited favourite small ports on Kalamos and Paxos and discovered new ones on Ithica and the mainland. Towards the end of September we slowly made our way North to Corfu to over winter at Gouvia Marina. We are looking


Leonie took in quite a lot of water during the first few hours but thanks to her temporary home in the shed she hadn’t dried out too much and the in-take soon dwindled to next to nothing.
