Care First offers new opportunities to adults
Care First Ltd has been awarded a significant contract by Birmingham Metropolitan College to deliver City & Guilds courses to 45 adults with learning disabilities across the Birmingham and Staffordshire. The contract enables adults with limited opportunities to increase their life skills through horticulture, woodwork and craft and design courses delivered from the Great Barr-based company’s sites. All courses will be delivered from premises
situated on business parks and in the community. Care First is keen to establish a new site in the
south east of Birmingham/Chelmsley Wood to offer opportunities to adults with learning disabilities in that area but needs help identifying suitable venues from which to operate. Any businesses with spare space/building or
grounds, from which a horticultural project could be operated and interested in helping get such a project off the ground should contact Neil Thorogood, one of the directors responsible for project development.
40 CHAMBERLINK November 2016
As part of the national ‘Hate Crime Awareness Week’, the Muslim Women’s Network UK (MWNUK) has launched a campaign called ‘#AndMuslim’. The campaign aims to challenge
what MWNUK claims are ‘negative stereotypes’ of Muslim women, who are ‘often portrayed as victims, oppressed, or linked to extremism’.
‘Muslim women should not just be identified by their faith’
MWNUK wants to combat this by putting forward a more positive picture of the female Muslim community in Britain, by celebrating successes, achievements and contributions. As part of its campaign, MWNUK has put
together a series of short videos on its YouTube channel, which demonstrate that many Muslim women are diverse and active British citizens. One of the women featured is Dr Iram Sattar
who is a GP, who plays football and is a massive Liverpool FC fan. Another, Jahanara Salihi, is a civil servant with a passion for motorcycles.
MWNUK also says that Muslim women can be
faith leaders too, with one example being Chaplain Shahin Ashraf, who provides religious and pastoral support within the community and also works with priests and rabbis to bring people together and promote cohesion. Faeeza Vaid, executive
director of MWNUK, said: “The central message is that Muslim women are active contributors to Britain in so many different ways. The
campaign highlights that we all have multiple identities, and for many faith is an important and enabling one. We’re also saying that Muslim women should not just be identified by their faith.” The campaign launch event was hosted by Naz
Shah MP, who said: “The rise in hate crimes needs to be addressed to ensure that no one lives in fear of being targeted simply because of who they are. The #AndMuslim campaign is a fantastic initiative to raise awareness of the brilliant contributions of Muslim women in this country.”
Team goes the extra mile
A 30-strong team from international humanitarian charity Penny Appeal gathered to take part in the Great Birmingham Run, helping orphans every step of the way by raising money to open an orphanage in Asia. As part of #TeamOrange – the name given to the charity’s volunteers and fundraisers – they
took part inf the 13.1-mile run led by Haroon ‘The Mota-vator’ Mota, Midlands fundraising manager at Penny Appeal’s Birmingham base on Ladypool Road. He is pictured with members of the team. Together, they have raised £15,000 so far to open a new orphanage in Pakistan, which will
become home to 10 vulnerable orphans and give them all they need for a brighter future. To be part of #TeamOrange and help transform lives, contact Haroon at
