Greater Birmingham’s leading companies Engineers of the future: the Bromsgrove students at Adi

Students get head start in engineering

Students at a Bromsgrove secondary school are getting ready to swap the classroom for real world experience, with the launch of an employer-backed scheme designed to revolutionise the future of engineering in the UK. North Bromsgrove High School

in partnership with the Birmingham-based multi- disciplinary engineering solutions company, Adi Group, has unveiled a pre-apprenticeship qualification for 14 to 16-year-olds which recently took in its first contingent of 12 students. Aimed at those students who are

potentially looking toward a hands- on engineering career, the pre- apprenticeship qualification will offer practical experience and

employability skills. Occupying 10 per cent of their overall GCSE curriculum time, the students will spend half a day per week in a live workshop at Adi’s headquarters in Kings Norton. Dave Hadley-Pryce, headmaster

of North Bromsgrove High School, said: “We have put together this new qualification as part of our efforts to respond to a growing need in education to prepare students for the broad spectrum of career opportunities available to them after they leave school.” Alan Lusty, CEO of Adi Group,

said: “The UK is known for its world class engineering, and we’re committed to inspiring the next generation of hands-on engineers in order to help address the skills gap.”

A Birmingham cyber-security firm is aiming for a five-fold surge in revenues following a successful first four years – to help combat the world’s single biggest criminal threat. With cyber-crime now estimated

at a staggering £750 billion worldwide, BrindleyPlace-based Equilibrium Security Services are at the cutting edge of moves to stop the hi-tech fraudsters.

‘The cyber-criminal industry is worth £750bn worldwide’

The firm is aiming to push revenues from their current £500,000 to up to £3 million over the next few years as companies seek protection from increasingly sophisticated fraudsters. Anish Chauhan, who founded the

business four years ago, said: “Companies today cannot not be online. The cyber-criminal industry is worth £750 billion worldwide – it is now the biggest criminal activity. “Why break into a warehouse or

hold somebody up in the street when you can go online and hold somebody up to ransom? If a

company gets hit for £50,000 it could cost them their business.” Head of marketing and sales,

Gemma Beardmore, said: “Hackers do not care – they are going to go for the low-hanging fruit which do not invest in security. “It is like the Mafia – the foot

soldiers may be in the UK but the criminal masterminds are outside, hotspots are places like Afghanistan, China and Russia. Businesses need to sit up and take notice – there are a lot of people putting their heads in the sand and just thinking ‘they will never target us as we are too small for them’. “We have seen good growth and have doubled revenues year on year.”

Recruitment firm celebrates one-year milestone

Finance recruiter Marks Sattin is celebrating its first anniversary in Birmingham – as the ‘new boys on the block’ helping to fill dozens of key vacancies across the West Midlands. The Newhall Street recruitment specialists launched in Birmingham on September 21 2015 – and say they have already cornered a niche in a market with vast career opportunities for accountants and

finance professionals. The branch has already doubled

in size from a three-man team to six, placing nearly 100 individuals into new roles in less than a year and is targeting further growth in line with the huge investments in the region by the likes of Jaguar Land Rover, Birmingham Airport and HSBC. David Birch, who heads up the office, said: “The sheer level of

investment in the region is a major driver for us – the economy is booming and we are expanding to respond to that demand. “The Midlands is a very volatile

market with significant churn, people are regularly moving on for more money and more opportunities. “The difficulty is that there are

not enough candidates for the market. Our job is to go out there

and find the right people. In one year, we have experienced considerable growth. “It is a very competitive market –

there are four finance recruiters within 100 yards of our office in Birmingham – but we have a great team and have hired dedicated specialists, we are the new boys on the block and have made everybody else sit up and take notice.”
