Southern Delaware, in the heart of the Mid Atlantic and only a short drive from the New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore/Washington metros, offers a treasure trove of appealing choices for meeting and event planners.

As a resort area, Southern Delaware boasts a large and varied selection of hotel properties and dozens of meeting venues accommodating from 25 to 500 attendees. Additionally, thanks to its rich history and natural beauty, including 26 miles of Atlantic five star beaches, the area has long attracted creative entrepreneurs and visual, performing and culinary artists, resulting in a welcoming, laid back vibe and an impressive selection of cultural offer- ings, activities, attractions, as well as dining and entertainment options.

The most recent addition to the area is the Bethany Beach Ocean Suites, a luxury oceanfront property located on the boardwalk in Bethany Beach. Meeting spaces include a boardroom, conference room, and ballroom meeting space for up to 300 people. The property also offers on-site dining, catering, a full service spa, indoor/outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, and business center.

Another new property is the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott on Coastal Highway, just minutes from downtown Rehoboth Beach. The property offers modern audio-visual facilities and free Wi-Fi access in the meeting room spaces, as well as an indoor swimming pool and a fitness center.

thingstoDo The area boasts world class museums and

mansions like Hagley,Winterthur and Nemours, which feature incredible collections of antiques, artwork and sculpture. The Delaware Art Museum’s collection of American Illustration and Pre-Raphaelite artwork is outstanding. The Delaware Contemporary Arts Center mounts 30 cutting edge exhibitions every year.

Other unique attractions include the Kalmar Nyckel, a seaworthy recreation of the tall ship that brought the first settlers to Wilmington in 1638, and small colonial towns like Historic New Castle and Historic Odessa, which retain their 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century charm.

Team building activities and group outings also are things Southern Delaware does very well. Bolstered by excellent local transportation compa- nies with fleets capable of accommodating groups of any size, the area offers everything from food tours to cooking classes, brewery, winery or dis- tillery tours, boat cruises, professionally guided kayak trips, historic walking tours, chartered fishing trips, live theatrical performances, and standup pad- dleboard lessons and treks.

Also of interest to planners seeking team building activities is Escape Rehoboth, Southern Delaware’s first escape room, in which groups work together in a one-hour race to get out of a “locked” room by solving a series of puzzles and clues related to a storyline.

Just this year, Cape Water Tours and Taxi added a new 49 passenger pontoon vessel that is totally enclosed, climate controlled, and equipped with audio-visual equipment, LED television, sound system, a spacious restroom, table seating, capability for food/bar service, and LED lighting.

Golf is another extremely popular group activity in Southern Delaware, which is lucky to have some incredibly beautiful courses, including seven signature courses like the Bayside Resort Golf Course, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus. No matter the skill level of the group, there are courses here to suit.
