The Grand Opera House in Wilmington, DE

Location is a key factor in the Greater Wilmington Area’s popularity for meetings and conventions. Greater Wilmington is situated midway between New York City and Washington, DC on Interstate-95. It’s less than 30 minutes south of Philadelphia International Airport and is accessible by more than 80 trains, including Amtrak’s high speed Acela Express, which stops at the Wilmington station every day.

Affordability is another lure. The fact that there is no sales tax in Delaware translates into an immediate return on investment for meeting planners because meeting room rentals, food, beverages and entertainment are tax-free, and the hotel tax in Greater Wilmington is considerably less than surrounding areas.

In addition, the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau allocates $50,000 annually to support a Transportation Incentive. Funds are administered on a first come, first serve basis. GWCVB also has initiated a Sports Incentive through which a total of $20,000 has been dedicated to bringing new sports tournaments to the area. Up to $3,000 per team is available based on tournaments that achieve a minimum of 100 actualized room nights; both the sports facility and the hotel must be a GWCVB member.
