Atlantic City Country Club has quite a storied past of its own. In the late 1800s, the shore town boasted beaches, a boardwalk and outstanding hotels, but no golf course. When business declined in 1897, the game made its debut and the site was named Country Club of Atlantic City. While still under construction, the course and clubhouse officially opened just in time for the 1898 summer season.

The clubhouse featured a barbershop, hotel rooms, a dining room and grand ballroom, which were enveloped in elegance. Social events by the thousands were held here. There was even an organized crime convention hosted by infamous New Jersey political boss Nucky Johnson. One of the attendees – Al Capone – was alleged to have hidden out at the club to avoid apprehension. Other, more reputable guests of the club have included Grace Kelly’s father Jack, and titans of entertainment like Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra.

GolfWeek, GolfMagazine and Golf Digest have named the Atlantic City County Club as the #1 Public Golf Course in New Jersey.
