Art to see on Platform Three

In 2014, Chiltern Railways launched the ‘Chiltern Art Collaboration’ as part of our commitment to support the arts. We joined forces with Birmingham-based art organization, Eastside Projects, to commission a series of artwork for our timetables. The projects aim is to provide art on the move for the thousands of passengers who make the journey between Birmingham and London. Richard Woods, whose artwork
is featured on our current timetable (Winter and Spring Train Times, December 2015 to May 2016), is an internationally acclaimed artist using sculpture, painting and woodblock printing to create new versions of reality, often on an architectural scale. Woods makes exaggerated, garish representations of traditional British architectural and interior motifs, such as wooden flooring, chintz wallpapers, crazy paving or red bricks and has recently completed his own Woodblock House in East London. For his collaboration with
Chiltern Railways, Woods has applied his love of patterns, logos and motifs, to the creation of a series of iconic maze puzzle images that represent different journeys on the route or in the minds of passengers. These new images offer up what some might see as mundane or exotic life choices, conveying humour, warmth and shared experiences. Lucky travel agent drives away with prize
A
merican Airlines, the world’s largest airline, has given away a brand new Fiat 500 car to Helen Davis, a lucky Midlands-based travel agent
from Travel Counsellors, in a competition with Birmingham Airport. UK-based travel agents were given the opportunity
to enter the competition between April and October 2015 once they had secured a booking for travel before the end of the year, on the new daily American Airlines service from Birmingham to New York’s JFK airport.
‘We can only sustain routes if they are popular with consumers and our planes are full’
American Airlines launched the new daily services last May, bringing the Oneworld Alliance to Birmingham and opening up new opportunities to fly to North America and onwards to the Caribbean, South America, Canada and Bermuda. The Fiat 500, from Guest Motors Limited in
Willenhall, was presented to Helen at Birmingham Airport in front of an American Airlines 757 aircraft. Helen, from Bloxwich, said: “I’ve worked in the travel
industry for 15 years and I’ve never won anything like this. My husband is as happy as me as I’ve always borrowed his car to get about. This is a dream come true – thank you very much to all the companies involved in making this possible!” William Pearson, aviation development director at Birmingham Airport, said: “I am delighted that the competition had such a national reach, with entries from both leisure and corporate travel agents stretching from Scotland to the southern counties. It was absolutely fantastic to see Helen’s face when we handed her the keys to her brand new car.” David Thomas, director of sales for American Airlines
in UK and Ireland, said: “Birmingham Airport is an important part of our regional UK network and the strategy for our Atlantic joint business with British Airways. Demand for more long haul service to key US business and leisure destinations is increasing. Launching Birmingham to New York (JFK) in May 2015 was our response to that demand. “We can only sustain routes if they are popular with
consumers and our planes are full. This contest has been focused on increasing the awareness of this route, as well as our extensive onward connections beyond JFK, to UK-based travel agents.”
Another new route for Wizz Air
Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, is launching a new route from Birmingham to Wroclaw, the biggest city in Western Poland. The route will commence on 18 March next year
and will be operated with two weekly flights, on Mondays and Fridays. Tickets for the new route have now gone on sale
and can be booked from £15.49 via
wizzair.com. Tamara Mshvenieradze, corporate communications Manager at Wizz Air, said: “We are thrilled to announce today excellent news for our UK customers. “Wizz now offers five routes to three countries
from Birmingham. With fares from only £15.49 we urge our customers to book the lowest fares today on
wizzair.com.” William Pearson, Birmingham Airport’s aviation
development director, said: “Launching from Birmingham in September this year, Wizz has gone from strength to strength and now already operates to Warsaw and Budapest, and will be commencing Poznan later this month and Bucharest in May. “This additional service to Wroclaw from March will
give direct access for the first time from Birmingham and I’m certain it will be popular with those visiting relatives and for short leisure breaks.”
