WHAT’S ON AT GREATER BIRMINGHAM CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE THEHUB P

olitician, broadcaster and author Gyles Brandreth is to make a triumphant return to the Chamber’s annual dinner and awards. He was special guest at last year’s dinner and awards, and this

year has also been invited to host the event too. As part of his brief, he will be addressing the ‘in or out’ referendum

on Britain’s membership of the European Union, which is due to take place this year (although a date has yet to be set). The last time Chamber members were asked for their view on

Europe was in 2014, when 60 per cent of those surveyed said that leaving the EU would have a ‘negative’ impact. The Chamber is due to carry out further surveys on Europe ahead of the referendum. Gyles will be well suited to talk about the issues linked to the UK’s membership of the EU, having held top posts in government as a Whip and Lord Commissioner of the Treasury in John Major’s government, whilst MP for Chester.

‘His address about the forthcoming EU referendum will be timely, and will no doubt spark off many debates’

Politics apart, Gyles Brandreth has a varied and successful career in other fields, including starring in his own award-winning musical revue in London’s West End. As a broadcaster, he has appeared in programmes ranging from ‘Just

a Minute’ and ‘Wordaholics’ to ‘QI’ and ‘Have I Got News for You’. As an author and biographer, he has published two volumes of diaries:

‘Breaking the Code: Westminster Diaries’ and ‘Something Sensational to Read in the Train: The Diary of a Lifetime’, and also two royal biographies, ‘Philip & Elizabeth: Portrait of a Marriage’ and ‘Charles & Camilla: Portrait of a Love Affair’, as well as a series of Victorian detective stories, ‘The Oscar Wilde Murder Mysteries’. His appearances on stage are

numerous, and include Malvolio and the Sea Captain in Twelfth Night: The Musical at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Lady Bracknell in a new musical version of The Importance of Being Earnest. Gyles Brandreth is

one of Britain’s busiest after-dinner speakers and award ceremony hosts. He is married to writer and publisher Michèle Brown, with whom he co-curated the exhibition of 20th century children’s authors at the National Portrait Gallery and founded the award-winning Teddy Bear Museum now based at the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon. Chamber Chief Executive Paul Faulkner said: “We are delighted that

Gyles has agreed to return as guest speaker and host our annual dinner and awards. His address about the forthcoming EU referendum will be timely, and will no doubt spark off what will be many debates about this important issue during the course of the year, involving the region’s business community.” About 1,000 guests are expected to attend the black tie event, at the ICC on 28 April. Individual ticket prices have been set at £130

+ VAT and the event will commence with a 6pm reception.
