PREMIER MEMBERS GREATER BIRMINGHAM’S LEADING COMPANIES
New members get disco fever
The Chamber’s Premier membership service has recruited its 340th member, a figure partly achieved by a ‘Black Friday’ discount initiative. This initiative – which
offered discounted membership fees for a limited period – saw the recruitment of 32 new Chamber members, some of whom opted to become Premier members. The next event that Premier members can enjoy is on 11 March, and will feature the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra performing a ‘symphonic disco spectacular’. The event will feature the
best hits from the seventies, from the likes of Kool and the Gang, Sister Sledge, and Donna Summer.

ore than 100 Chamber Premier members and patrons attended the annual President’s Christmas Lunch, held at the Hyatt Regency in
the city centre. The main speaker at the event was James Cardwell-
Moore, commercial director of Scottish water company Business Stream, who spoke about ‘Fortune Favours the Bold’, a new research project commissioned by the company. The report found that boldness in business is about
being clear and ambitious, taking calculated risks and being brave once decisions have been made.
‘Mapping out a route for success lies at the heart of every business plan’
Mr Cardwell-Moore said: “Particular situations also require a bold approach, such as launching a new product or when entering a new geographic territory, a situation which is very relevant to us as the English retail water market opens next year enabling all non- household customers to be able to choose their water supplier. “The research also identified that bold businesses are
more flexible in their attitude to change and consider themselves to be less traditional in their outlook. We further found that the level of capital and/or resources that an organisation has access to and the speed with which it feels able to make decisions are critical.

“Mapping out a route for success lies at the heart of
every business plan. By adopting a clear role for boldness within that, I believe that we will see more businesses achieving better results for themselves and their customers.” Leadership and organisation development
consultancy Silverback sponsored the pre-dinner drinks, with head of learning and developement Cheryl Green talking to guests about how ‘generation Y’ can contribute to business success.
