BCU helps forge US connections B

BY FRED BROMWICH

ABC Midlands has welcomed Birmingham City University (BCU) on board as a new patron in a move which will further

strengthen transatlantic connections. In the past BCU has supported BABC Midlands

through its faculty of Business, Law and Social Science, helping to ensure that the student body was connected to the commercial opportunities offered by transatlantic relationships. With the appointment of a new pro-vice

chancellor, Professor Julian Beer, and the launch of its new business-to-business service, BCU Advantage, the university believes the timing is perfect to place its support for BABC on a more formal footing, and involve a wider range of academic colleagues. Professor Beer said: “BCU prides itself on

being a creative practice-based international university with staff, students and alumni drawn from over 100 countries. We are delighted to be developing our relationship with Cisco, Microsoft and SAP, and hope to use our involvement with BABC Midlands to connect local Midlands firms with these US giants.” BCU’s US academic connections are equally

strong, with staff forming active partnerships with San Diego State, Auburn and North West Missouri State Universities. Helen Melville, manager of BABC Midlands,

A boardwalk to remember

A Birmingham-based company has entered the record books by helping to create the longest boardwalk in the Emirates constructed from composite materials. It runs alongside a beach stretching from a Dubai marine resort to the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel. DPDSi, founded 16 years ago by managing

director Barry John Davis to expand upon his original business of Davis Product Developments, provides professional outsourced business development and related sales services to a wide range of markets across all borders The Jumeriah Corniche development,

sanctioned by His Highness Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president and prime minister of UAE and Emir of Dubai, is aimed at converting eight-and-a-half-miles of beachfront into a vibrant recreational area. The project includes a five metre-wide

walkway, a four metre-wide jogging track, rest areas, retail kiosks and shaded benches overlooking the beach. When completed, the Corniche will be the

longest in the Emirates, representing the largest use of high-performance composite decking supplied by US manufacturer Trex Company in a single public installation. Through the whole process, DPDSi guided Trex and landscape products supplier Tanseeq to

some significant challenges. But by being able to deliver such a prestigious project – which required pulling together a range of skills and information – we added significantly to the status of our clients and our brand on a global platform.”

BABC Midlands, it is an ideal time for businesses in the region to explore new links to a consumer market that is the largest in the world.” She added: “BCU has enviable US connections

and we are delighted that the Birmingham City University’s patronage of BABC will provide a further boost to our organisation and its growing membership base.”

BABC plans a

birthday bash A milestone event is being planned for the BABC Midlands calendar – an anniversary lunch to celebrate its 20th birthday. The lunch will take place on 17 March at Malmaison, The Mailbox, Birmingham. Tickets for the lunch are priced at £28 for members and £35 for non-members. BABC Midlands, one of 20 Chapters

associated with the British American Business Council, the world’s largest transatlantic networking organisation, was founded by a group of regionally-based professionals and continues to be a strong group of businesses, corporations and SMEs engaged in trade and business with the US. BABC Midlands became part of Birmingham Chamber in 2010 and its close relationships with the Chamber has encouraged membership to go from strength-to-strength. The lunch is being sponsored by State of South Carolina Europe Office.
