There’s no doubt that cars have become more and more like computers on wheels. Vehicle electrics have become a central issue for vehicle maintenance, efficient running and of course safety.

Most independent garages simply don’t have the knowledge, experience and equipment to cope with electrical faults and refer customers to main dealers. Not so with Larry’s. Over the past few years, we’ve not only invested in diagnostic equipment (see January’s Female Focus), but also in training and equipment to tackle most annoying faults. This means that we are pretty well unique in being able to offer complete vehicle maintenance. So with that in mind, here are our top 4 faults we deal with.

1 - SRS and ABS problems. SRS stands for Supplementary Restraint System - in other words your airbags. ABS stands for Antilock Braking System - stopping you skidding when braking hard. Clearly 2 of the most important safety factors in your car, both having an undoubted proven track record in saving lives. If you see a warning light, don’t ignore it. Fixing it is for us to do. It could be broken loom, corroded wiring, short circuits or relay problems. Actually, you’d be surprised of how many ‘bodge-jobs’ we see and fix.

2 - Lights not working. Of course this can just be a blown bulb, but sometimes it can be something a bit more serious, such as a wiring or shorting problem. In fact, regularly blown bulbs can be a symptom of deeper electrical faults.

3 - Car stereo problems. So, this may not be vital to your car’s running, but it can be damned annoying when things don’t work. In fact, fitting after-market stereos and speakers has become one of our specialities, fitting nearly a hundred car stereos in 2014 alone! We clearly know what we’re doing and will have you singing along to your favourite CD in no time at all.

4 - Now this is a strange one - trailer and caravan electrics. This can be one of the biggest headaches in vehicle electrics and logically tracing faults can drive even the most patient person mad! At Larry’s we are one of the few garages actually licensed to fit tow-bars and in order to do that, we really need (and have) a good understanding of trailer electrics.

The message is simple, if you have an electrical niggle, an odd warning light that comes on - even intermittently, or just feel your car is a bit sluggish, it may well be an electrical issue. Bring it along to Larry’s and we’ll get to the bottom of the problem, and have you on your way knowing your car is in tip top working order, running well and of course safe for the road.
