Page 17 Neck pain, what to do? by Sabine Kaiser

One in every two adults suffers neck pain at least once in their lives. For the neck to hurt it normally means we have been overloading it for a long time. The main causes are posture related and overloaded muscles in the back, neck and shoulder area.

How does this overload happen? Think about your daily routine! - How is my posture when I sit in front of my computer, in my car, whilst sitting having dinner, when using my mobile phone?

- How much time do I spend sitting down? - How is my sleeping position? Do I often read in bed? (Your pillow or mattress might be adding to the problem). - Also factors like a bad mood, depression and loneliness play a roll. You might literally be carrying ‘the weight of the world on your shoulders’….

What symptoms do you experience? - A strong neck pain, often radiating to the shoulders - Headache, dizziness, blurred vision, ringing in the ears - A stiff neck

How can it be treated? - A combination of heat therapy, electrotherapy and massage - Trigger point therapy and the removal of blockages through manual therapy - Relaxation therapy

- Active stretch exercises - It is very important for people to receive some ‘healthy back education’ with information and instructions about correct and incorrect movement and behaviour patterns (sitting, bending, lifting, carrying)

Using a combination of these treatments you can expect a signifi cant improvement in your health, which can be prolonged by doing a few exercises at home and making some small changes to your daily routine.

All of the above treatment options and more are available at REMA Rehab Centre in Denia, where our highly qualifi ed physiotherapists individually assess each case.
