Mini Facelift

First of all the procedure is carried out locally in our premises in Javea as long as the patient is suitable for local anaesthesia and it is done under sedation. This sedation uses “midazolam,” a fast acting and fast wearing off sedative now used in endoscopies and dentistry. It puts the patient in a so called “twilight anaesthesia” which means they can be awakened easily with a loud sound or a gentle shaking. Most times the patient sleeps or is so deeply sedated that they do not remember much or anything about the operation. It is safe and effective and without the risks of a general. Although the risk of general anaesthesia is now lower than in the past, it still requires to be performed by a qualified anaesthesiologist in a hospital environment and I frankly do not know any ethical reason to take that risk on a previously healthy patient for a purely cosmetic reason when it can be performed with local.

This is a very effective procedure which is basically a complete face lift that doesn’t involve the upper third of the face; the forehead. Due to popularity, I am repeating this article on some of the most frequently asked questions.

The contraindications for local anaesthesia are those derived from previous medical conditions such as heart condition, COPD, long time steroid treatments and a few others of which it is always advisable to carry any surgical procedure in a hospital environment with the availability of an intensive care ward.

The operation takes about two and a half hours and the patient can be sent home with dressings afterwards. It is important to note that on the first night the patient must remain with a responsible adult as the sedative may still be partially in their system. Dressings are usually removed on the following day but in some cases it may be advised to wear them for another two days.

The post-op varies and is different according to the age of the patient or factors like previous health or habits such as smoking. We had a case where the operation was performed on a Saturday evening, the dressings removed on Monday morning and the patient was able to go back to work on the same evening, less than 48 hours after surgery, covering the stitches only with her own hair, although usually normal activities can be resumed after about three to five days.
