THE CHEF’S APPRENTICE PROJECT Featuring Primary 7, Dunblane Primary School
Dunblane Primary School was thrilled to be able to offer their pupils a unique and exciting opportunity to work alongside the school catering team. The Chef’s Apprentice Programme (CAP) was designed to give every Primary seven pupil two days of work experience in the school kitchen and dining hall.
This approach to learning was a fantastic way to bring the curriculum and learning to life. In line with Curriculum for Excellence, CAP delivered Health & Wellbeing and Technologies Experiences & Outcomes in a real life context, allowing children to develop and apply their knowledge, skills and attributes.
The programme was originally delivered by West Dunbartonshire Council, and was adapted by the teachers of Primary seven, Vicky McLachlan and Kat Robertson, through partnership working with Stirling Council Catering Services. During the two days, pupils took on the role of a catering assistant and prepared food, learning about health and safety and taking on responsibilities in the workplace whilst providing their lunch customers with a high quality of service. Two of the children, Harry and Keira, spoke about their experiences of this innovative and exciting project
“It was a cold Wednesday morning when we walked up to the kitchen door. When we got there, we got changed into our kitchen uniform and it felt like we were on Masterchef! We started off the day making salad and wraps. At lunchtime, Keira was out serving food and I was doing the dishwasher which does not sound like much fun but it actually was.” Harry Wilson P7
“It was our second day in the kitchen after a day’s break. It was a busy day because fish and chips was on the menu. We worked extra hard and we had the dinner ladies to keep us right. Harry was on the serving job and I was on the dishwasher. I found that the dishwasher got really busy but I liked it because you only had to load the dishes. We learned how hard the kitchen staff work for us as well as learning about hygiene, measuring weights and checking that each item of food weighs the same. Overall, the whole experience was great!” Keira Cant P7
Pupils showed an appreciation for the work that goes into preparing school lunches, and how their current learning is relevant to their futures. A few future Masterchef finalists may have been discovered!
