If you’re conscientious about keeping your car in good running order, you’ll know the importance of keeping your engine oil fresh and topped up. You’ll also be aware that there is a cost associated to this, so what’s the best thing to do, change often use cheaper oil, or splash out and use a higher quality oil.
At Larry’s we always use Castrol Magnatec® oil where possible. We believe it to be the best balance of price and quality. We use it in our cars and are very happy to use it for our customers. The downsides of using cheap oil are many: from blocking of particulate filters (easy and relatively inexpensive to fix), right up to an engine seizure (not easy and you don’t want to know the cost!).
People often ask us about levels. Let’s be clear, too much oil can be just as bad as too little – especially in diesel engines! In these engines, un-burnt fuel is dumped in the oil sump. This is quite normal and exactly how diesel engines were designed to work. The thing is, too much oil will lead to un-burnt diesel being thrown around your engine – not so good! So when you’re checking your oil, make sure the engine is cool (not running), pull out your dipstick and check the oil is neither too high or too low.
When we do oil changes, we always check the oil filter. If it’s clogged up, or has been on the car for a while, we always strongly recommend changing it. In fact, our oil change service deliberately includes a new oil filter, something some
garages have been known to ignore! All our mechanics are fully experienced and qualified so we do know what’s right from wrong!
Disposal of used engine oil is very important – you can’t just throw it down the drain! As a reputable garage, we always dispose of oil according to regulations, which means that the environment is cared for. We even have a certificate to prove it!
