Anyone that has an email address will be familiar with spam emails. They are easy to spot and ignore. It’s a little different when someone telephones you personally!
Cold Calls....... NOT from Microsoft
Recently there’s been a spate of such calls around the Costa Blanca. Each time the caller claims to be from Microsoft, and says that they’ve detected a virus, or malicious code, running on your computer. They promise that their technical department can clean your computer for you remotely.
Neither Microsoft, nor any other company, can randomly detect what code you have on your computer, and certainly will NOT telephone you asking for access.
The aim of the scam is to gain remote access to your computer or make you download some software, make it look to you as if they’ve found a problem, and then offer to help. Firstly, they may try to get you to pay money over to them to clean your computer for you. Secondly, they may steal your credit card information,
and passwords from your own computer including logins to online banking, or services where your credit card or banking information may be held (online shopping etc).
If you receive any such calls, Microsoft advise that you try to get the phone number they are calling from, and then report it to the Spanish authorities, or to the country where the phone call originated. If you have already given over information and think your computer has been compromised, you should change ALL your passwords for the computer itself, and any online services you use. This can be a pain to do, but an essential step to protecting yourself.
