Page 19 No Man is an Island Unto Himself.
The title of this month’s article is taken from a Sonnet by John Donne 1572-1631. How true this still is in the 21st Century. No-matter how we measure on the intelligence scale, how meagre or grand our fi nancial status; there are times when we need a little assistance at what may be, one of the most diffi cult times in our life!
As we pass through life there are always new challenges, new relationships and situations. Life does not stand still. We either meet and engage with life or seek to avoid reality. What have you already experienced through relations with parents, grandparents and others? Issues from the past that remain unresolved are too often carried forward to become heavy burdens resulting in ill-health. We are unable to change what has happened in the past but our actions and behaviour ‘now’ are in our control!
During our lifetime we will be confronted with changes in role and identity beyond our control. The breakdown of relationships, loss of work affecting our income and status, ill- health, disability and bereavement can occur at any time. Family and friends may give support but generally the advice given is based on their perspective of the world. What do you want for your future? Counselling is not an easy option as some may believe, neither is it a weakness. It takes ‘real courage’ to ‘self- help’ and to seek independent support. But the advantages are well worthwhile. Talking with an Independent Personal Counsellor is completely confi dential. Whatever you discuss or disclose does not come back to haunt you later in a family situation, within your circle of friends or your local community. An experienced Therapist has the skill to help you make choices to move forward for your future happiness and fulfi lment.
