Exotic pets are becoming ever more popular and more frequent in our homes, and like every pet they also need veterinary care.

At Clínica Veterinaria El Puerto we are proud to care for exotic pets, and are constantly advancing our knowledge and training of exotic pets as each species has different

requirements. The term ‘exotic pets’ covers reptiles, birds and small mammals.

Some of the most common exotic pets are rabbits, ferrets, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, and birds such as budgerigars, cockatiels, love birds, parrots and others. The most frequent reptiles are tortoises, turtles, chameleons and others, and for these species we offer consultations, radiology, microchipping, surgery, handling, nutrition, ‘exotic kennels’ and more. It is very important to assess an exotic pet’s needs, as their behaviour is different to a cat or dog. Many of these animals are prey animals so they hide their illnesses extremely well, and very often owners only notice when the symptoms of any illness have progressed so far that the animal is critical. Thus, it is very important to observe your exotic pets and if anything changes in their behaviour as small as it may be, it is worth a check with the vet.

We treat each species individually giving them the care and appropriate handling, and trying to reduce as much stress as possible. We also advise the best way of transporting them from your home to the clinic where we can give them the best care.

As animal lovers we also help wildlife, like injured sparrows, pigeons, seagulls and other wild animals. We treat them until the wildlife association can come and collect them to rehabilitate them and then release them back to the wild.

If you do find a wild animal please contact us as soon as possible, as they often require specialised care and the sooner we can give them this, the more chance the animal has of surviving. If you are interested in getting an exotic pet, we can also offer advice to make sure you have all the correct information about a specific pet, very often pet shops lack this information. For any further information please don’t hesitate in giving us a call, email or even pop in!
