Your healthy magazine! Halitosis
Halitosis or ´bad breath´ is defined as the set of unpleasant smells that are emitted from the mouth.
It is a problem that affects a third of the population and can have a negative impact in both the personal and business relationships of the sufferer.
In 90% of halitosis cases, the origin comes from the mouth due to an accumulation of bacterial plaque and tartar, to decay, to an incorrectly adjusted prosthesis (such as a denture or a bridge), to an old or broken filling, to an infection in a tooth, or to xerostomia (dry mouth), and more than half of cases closely related to gum disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis.
Only 10% halitosis cases originate away from the mouth and they are typically due to digestive or respiratory disorders, to systemic diseases such as diabetes, or due to the use of certain medications such as antidepressants.
Many people are unaware that they suffer from this problem, so it is recommended to regularly visit a dentist, who is the professional best suited to do a check-up and diagnosis in order to explore if you suffer from halitosis (because it can be confused with the temporary bad breath caused by eating certain foods and/or drinking alcohol or coffee) and treat the disease if halitosis is indeed present.
The dentist will perform an inspection, checking for tooth decay, tartar, misadjusted fillings or prosthesis, areas where food gets trapped, or gingivitis or periodontitis, all with the goal of establishing an appropriate treatment for your problem.
