massive success in the region, including collaborations with global brands like Nike and Levis.
It is telling that education in the fields of design and arts are regarded very highly on the academic agenda of many Asian countries.
Jackson Tan is a former student of LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts
in Singapore, a partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London.
This East-West collaboration at the education level is crucial to what is happening. I am proud to be playing a small part with the establishment of the Glasgow School of Art Singapore in 2012.
The GSA is delivering years 3 and 4 of its Bachelor of Art (Hons) Programmes
in Communication Design and Interior Design in Singapore, in partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology.
I am delighted to see a new generation of students challenging the preconceptions of Asian design and exploring alternative solutions.
Curiosity is a key fundamental characteristic we encourage in our students and we see evidence of this everywhere. In particular there is a willingness to explore cross- disciplinary collaboration which is hugely exciting for idea generation in any context.
It will be fascinating to see how these countries respond to the challenges of the next ten years.
My hope is that they will steer clear of the pitfalls,
such as pastiche and imitation, which interior designers can easily stumble into, especially when a market is developing at such a speed.
We in the West should embrace this new, curious generation and perhaps reflect on our own complacencies when thinking about the face of international design.
The global design
