SBID steps out at The Dorchester
UK and international design professionals fi lled the historic Ballroom of The Dorchester hotel for the SBID International Design Awards 2013
T
he award for the special Overall Winner of the SBID Internaitonal Design Awards 2013 was the Rockwell Group, an international
fi rm, for its design work on the W Singapore Hotel in Southeast Asia.
Its success was the perfect indicator of the truly international nature of the SBID Awards. The night’s winners included entries from the UK, America, Australia, Iceland, Switzerland, Qatar, Italy, China and the Netherlands (for more on the award winners go to the Awards Portfolio on pages 17-49).
The winners each received a beautiful SBID International Award trophy, commissioned from the Czech company Sans Souci Glass Deco.
Vanessa Brady, President of SBID, paid tribute to the hundreds of industry people attending the gala event: “Here we have some of the best and hardest working interior design professionals in the world.”
She presented the fourth SBID Fellowship Award to the entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir John Madejski OBE.
Sir John’s extraordinary career has included publishing, hospitality, property and manufacturing. He has used his boardroom successes to fund philanthropy in the arts, education and sport.
Accepting the honour, Sir John said: “I am very humbled to receive this. My only advice is to keep doing good work. If you really want it you will succeed.”
Vanessa revealed at the ceremony that SBID is joining forces with the award winning presenter Rhoda Wilson in a new initiative, turning the spotlight on Africa’s emerging interior design industry.
Rhoda, one of the best known faces in African media, will serve as an ambassador to Africa for the SBID Awards.
Vanessa said the global reach of the awards was proof that the Society is fi lling a much needed role in the industry: “SBID started life as an idea to build greater unity in a fractured industry and to create an across the board standard in competence. We are now the second largest member of the ECIA and the SBID Awards this year attracted hundreds of entries from 33 countries.”
Mike Read, the radio and TV presenter and writer, was on hand to offi ciate at the ceremony.
