T

he brief given to Penelope Allen Design was to take a dated, tired looking living room within a large country house and

create a contemporary, beautiful space suitable for a young family.

One specific of the brief was that part of the living space would need to serve as a home office for the client.

The room had few existing character features. There was a brick inglenook style fireplace and large windows, one arched. However, the house is surrounded by stunning countryside with some architecturally very interesting planting.

The design focused on creating and enhancing focal points within the interior to observe the landscape.

The selection of muted tones of taupe, champagne and deep browns was used to harmonise the interior with the outside and ensure the design did not detract from the beauty of the garden.

Rows of topiary trees were lit from below with white light to set the scene for a contemporary backdrop.

The scale of the room left the space feeling cold so deep tones and textures with reflective value were incorporated into the scheme to create a more intimate feel.

Penelope Allen Design is based in Surrey and offers a full interior design service.
