Newton Primary School
The children of Primary 1 have enjoyed being scientists and engineers recently and have participated with great enthusiasm in a number of classroom and outdoor playground experiments.
The first experiment was to see how water was transported through special tubes in the celery plant stem all the way up to the leaves at the top. The children placed the celery in three jars with water and food colouring and observed the changes throughout the day.
“We used red, green and blue food colouring in the water” ~ Allanah “The food colouring got sucked up by the celery” ~ Isla R “On the celery ‘smile’ there were blue, red and green dots” ~ Eva
Next, the children placed old 1p and 2p copper coins in glass dishes containing food sauces and white vinegar. We were very impressed with the results. They didn’t look old and worn any more. They were shiny and new!
“When we put the coins in the sauces, we noticed they became shiny” ~ Guy “We dipped the dirty coins into the sauces and left them to soak overnight” ~ Lilith & Caitlin
“We took part as groups and dropped our coins in the our chosen sauce” ~ Chloe “If there was an air bubble in the sauce the coin didn’t get shiny” ~ Isla R
