Gardener’s Tips and Advice: Lawn Advice Kindly supplied by George at Mo-Lawn/Stockbridge Nursery t: 821 414

Do you have a lawn with this ? Lawns in damp or poorly drained conditions can suffer from unsightly problems such as Cyanobacteria (an algae-like growth), or dog lichen. Cyanobacteria in particular can make the lawn very slippery, the cure is to fork over or spike the area to a depth of around 4 inches or 100mmm then an application of Ferrous Sulphate contained in Lawn Sand and ensure that the Ferrous Sulphate content is a minimum of 3% of the mixture. The Lawn sand will make the lichen go very black and

will make any moss in the area go black as well.

In general spike your lawn with a garden fork and do not feed your lawn too early, late April is usually ideal and feed with a balanced feed to begin with and then maybe a more nitrogen based fertiliser later. Too much fertiliser can be create the opposite effect and can me more harmful to a lawn, little doses are always better.

Or maybe your lawn has (Laetisaria fuciformis)? temperature

changes and Red

It is caused by common in

Thread early

summer and early autumn and specific mild

humid weather, the cure is and application of fungicide and to add nitrogen to the lawn area in the form of a light fertilise, use a Sulphate of Ammonia in a powder form if required , spike and aerate the lawn by forking over, let air in to the roots. Patches are unsightly but usually come back after treatment. Red thread is a common cause of patches of dead grass on lawns during wet summers and in autumn. Red thread will rarely kill the grass completely, and the patches will recover with appropriate remedial action.

The final thing to watch out for is Vine Weevil in your lawn, they can strip the root system of the grass and leave it in tufts, they look like a slow release fertiliser before they hatch and then when hatch look very like beetles ¼-1/2 in length, the cure is chemical application of nematodes usually by Nemaysis Chemical before, they can mutate very quickly in a lawn, careful looking after the lawn until they have all died off or left for your neighbours lawn, (they cannot fly but can walk around 3 miles in a year ! )
