Beaconhurst swimmers make a big splash for sports relief

Kerr Fletcher, 11, came up with the idea of a holding a sponsored swim for Sports Relief.

Kind-hearted pupils from Beaconhurst School made a big splash for charity when they raised nearly £2,000 with a sponsored swim.

Youngsters of all ages took part in the Sports Relief challenge at Stirling University’s pool and managed to boost the organisation’s funds by a massive £1,880.

The idea was sparked by eleven-year-old Kerr Fletcher and he also raised the biggest individual sponsorship amount of more than £600 with his 100 lengths.

Meanwhile, Murray Dickson, aged just seven, swam an amazing 104 lengths in an hour and Gregor Rodger, 11, managed an unrivalled 200 lengths during his swim session.

Delighted Beaconhurst swim coach Helen Tobin said: “Each of our swimmers has been fantastic and they have all done their bit for Sports Relief.

“I’m impressed with the distances they swam in the time available and the stamina, motivation and camaraderie shown during the challenge.

“And I’m particularly proud of Kerr Fletcher who inspired the sponsored swim after coming to me with the suggestion.”

More than 40 pupils from J1 to S4, took part in the event swimming a total of 2400 lengths which amounts to more than 37 miles (60km).

Each swimmer was sponsored and had to swim as many lengths as possible in their allotted time - while extra cash was raised by collecting donations from poolside spectators. 68
